Description
This is a close up of a hurdy-gurdy which is being played at the Canterbury Faire in Silverton, Oregon.
The hurdy-gurdy is a stringed instrument that makes a sound created by turning a crank which in turn makes a wheel rub against the strings. The wheel is like a violin bow and the sound is similar to a violin.
It is common at renaissance faires and folk music festivals in America and Europe . The most famous annual festival had been held since 1976 at Saint-Chartier in Central France. As of 2009, it is now at the Chteau d'Ars at La Chtre during the week nearest Bastille Day, July 14
