Description
Ballet originated in the 15th century during the Italian Renaissance. It spread quickly into France and Russia. Since these early beginnings it continued to become a widespread and highly technical form of dance with its own French based vocabulary. It has been influenced globally and every culture has incorporated the evolution of dance techniques.
One very recognized movement is the Pointe where a ballet dancer supports all their body weight on the tips of their extended feet within pointe shoes. Pointe shoes have structural reinforcing which distributes the dancers weight throughout the foot. This reduces the weight of the entire body on the toes enough to enable the dancer to support all body weight on fully vertical feet. The dancer is said to be en pointe when a fully extended vertical foot is said to be en pointe when touching the floor, even when not bearing wei ght.
