This Great Blue Heron was displaying to either intimidate another heron that came too close or was trying to attract a mate. It was hard to tell as the other heron who was also fluffed all up and holding his head straight and very stiff finally flew away.
The Great Blue Heron is one of the largest North American heron. The head-to-tail length 36 to54 inches, a wingspan of 66 to 79 inches and weigh from 4 to 8 lbs.
The Great blue herons have gray with a slight blue feather, reddish brown thighs. The neck is rusty-gray with black and white streak down the front. The head is a lighter shade with a nearly white face and a pair of black or gray plumes runs from just above the eye to the back of the head. The feathers on the lower neck are long and plume-like. It also has plumes on the lower back during the breeding season.
