Description
Cape Disappointment's name came about being when Captain John Meares failed to cross the river bar in 1788. This was accomplished several years later in 1792 by American Captain Robert Gray.
Cape Disappointment State Park (formerly Fort Canby State Park) is a publicly owned recreation area located southwest of Ilwaco, Washington and is the the southern portion ofLong Beach Peninsula. The lighthouse is where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean.
Winter storms can bring high surf that often washes over the rocks of the jetty and tosses the driftwood about that can be nearly the size of entire tree trunks. When this occurs the parking area is closed which is was on this day in the morning during the high tide. Debris was everywhere but once it was deemed safe the gates were thrown open for photographers, surfers and people just wanting to see the 20-25 waves.
