Description
This dragonfly was photographed at Hughes Water Garden in Oregon. Very hard to photograph until you find they tend to come back to a favorite perch. So if you sit patiently and wait they nearly always seem to come back so you can set up your shots.
In a dragonfy's larval stage, when they are known as nymphs or naiads, and as adults they are predators. For their first years they live in fresh water and as adults they may be on the wing for just a few days or weeks. Theyir reproduction is by indirect insemination. There is a delayed fertilization and sperm competition. During mating, the male holds the female by the back of the head or on the prothorax and the female curls her abdomen under her body to pick up sperm from the male's secondary genitalia at the front of his abdomen, forming the "heart" or "wheel" posture.
