Artist's Description
Burrowing owls live underground in burrows that have been dug out by small mammals or as in this case in farmlands under culverts. Due to their population decline many burrows are being created to help with this problem. The current burrowing owl population estimates are not well known their scarcity suggests significant declines across their range which is now from the Mississippi to the Pacific and in Florida. Most recent official estimates place them at less than 10,000 breeding pairs. Burrowing owls have disappeared from much of their historic range.
Unlike other owls, burrowing owls are active during the day, especially in the spring when they gather food for their large broods. This species of owl prefers open areas with low ground cover. They can often be found perching near their burrow on fence posts and trees.

Is this a pan of the same owl or six different owls? Either way, it is a unique and very cool image. Your beautiful and identified bird image has been featured by Wild Birds Of The World, a nature photography group. L/F
Wes and Dotty Weber replied:
Thanks for the feature! It is one bird as it ran across the field. All the images are layered into one blank image then aligned by rocks, etc. in the image. The fun begins with masks and revealing all the correct areas. The shadows were the most difficulty.
