Description
Knowing the northern lights were a good possibility this night I head to the other side of Mt Hood to Shaniko. Shaniko is a wonderful little ghost town located in Wasco County, Oregon, United States, on U.S. Route 97. As of the 2010 census the population was 36. It was a wonderful night of shooting with friends!
The Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights are caused by electrons from solar winds. What we see as lights are attracted to the north and south poles by the magnetic fields found there. They mix with atmospheric gases which creates the glow we see. Solar flares and coronal holes on the sun's surface can also cause the Northern Lights to appear.
The Vikings thought the Northern Lights were caused by the weapons of immortal warriors. The Alaskan Inuit people believed the lights were the souls of animals. The Menominee Indians thought the lights were the torches of giants living in the North.
