Description
A hood or as they are called in Britain a bonnet ornament symbolizes a car company much as a badge would. They are sometimes also called a radiator cap, motor mascot or car mascot. It was located on the front center portion of the hood.
These hood ornaments began being used in the 1920 and continued to be popular through the 1950s. Their original use however was more functional as automobiles had their radiator caps outside of the hood and on top of the grille and served as an indicator of the temperature of the engine's coolant fluid. This made a wonderful place for car companies to show off the miniature statuettes created by such sculptors such as Bazin, Paillet, Sykes, Renevey, and Lejeune.
