Description
Hoarfrost is an amazing item. This was taken in the mountains above Willow, Alaska. The temperature was well below zero fahrenheit and there was no wind. Even the snow that is usually smooth was spiky with the crystals.
Hoarfrost is the deposit of ice crystals on objects such as tree branches or plants such as in this image. It is formed by direct condensation of water vapour to ice when temperatures are below freezing and occurs when air is brought to its frost point by cooling. Hoarfrost is created in much the same way as dew is formed on similar objects except that the temperatures are below freezing to create hoar frost. In addition for hoarfrost to form the air must be damp enough so that when cooled it reaches saturation, and any additional cooling will cause condensation to occur.
