Description
This great grey owl was an injured owl that is now at Blue Mountain Wildlife in Pendleton, Oregon which is the largest rescue, rehabiliation and education organization serving Eastern Oregon & South Eastern Washington. Please visit their website at www.bluemountainwildlife.org.
The Great Grey Owl is one the largest owl being 24 to 33 inches, averaging 28 inches with a wingspan of 60 inches and can weigh 1 to 4 pounds The males are usually smaller than females which is common for owls.
They are diurnal meaning they hunt during the day. The yellow eyes are also a sign that these birds hunt during the day. The darker colored eyes of owls indicate they are nocturnal hunters. There does seem to be some variation in this as the Great Horned and the Short Eared owls which are nocturnal have yellow eyes. Any ideas on why this might be?
