This shot of a very large elk was along the Madison River. This was during the fall in the midst of the rut. It was pouring down rain and he was looking for a break in the traffic to cross the road, go across the river to a meadow. He finally made it by putting his head down and going for it. People need a bit of a push to get it in Yellowstone.
The elk is one of the largest species within the deer family in North America. Elk can mostly be found in forest and meadows close to the edge of forests. Male elk have antlers which are shed each year and grow larger with additional points. Every fall the males will bugle which is a loud series of vocalizations during the rut/mating season.
