Description
The snow leopard is a large cat from the mountain ranges of Central and South Asia in the alpine zones at elevations of 10,000 to 15,000 feet. It is listed as endangered since 2003. The wild population worldwide was estimated at between 4,080 and 6,590 adults. It was also estimated that fewer than 2,500 are reproducing in the wild. Since 2016 the estimates have somewhat improved of the worldwide population from 4,080 to about 8,700 individuals.
Snow leopards are somewhat smaller than the other big cats and range of sizes, generally weighing about 60 to 121 lbs. The male can occasionally weigh as much as 165 lbs and the female as light as 55 lbs. Their short body can measure from the head to the base of the tail 30 to 60 inches. Their tail is quite long at 31 to 39 inches.
