Description
Lake McDonald is the largest lake in Glacier National Park and is at an elevation of 3,153 feet.. It is located in the U.S state of Montana in Flathead County. Lake McDonald is approximately 10 miles long located at the west entrance to the park on Going to the Sun Road. The Going-to-the-Sun Road parallels the lake along its southern shoreline. Once the park was well established visitors were not using the trains as much and started using their own vehicles. Work was began on the 53-mile long Going-to-the-Sun Road and completed in 1932. Also known simply as the Sun Road, the road crosses the park east to west going over the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, 6,646 feet midway point into the park. The Sun Road is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 1985 was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
