Description
This shot of a very large elk was walking along in the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park.
The elk is one of the largest species within the deer family in North America. Elk can mostly be found in forest and meadows close to the edge of forests. Male elk have antlers which are shed each year and grow larger with additional points. Every fall the males will bugle which is a loud series of vocalizations during the rut/mating season. The bugling is a dominance or battle call to other males and also attracts females.
This photo of this elk which was taken in early summer still has velvet on his antlers. This was taken north of Norris in Yellowstone National Park.
