Description
This great grey owl was an injured owl that is now at the raptor club of WSU in eastern Washington. He is a stunning bird and being used as an educational bird being taken to schools and any other facility to teach the public of them and other raptors.
The Great Grey Owl is one the largest owl being 24 to 33 inches, averaging 28 inches with a wingspan of 60 inches and can weigh 1 to 4 pounds The males are usually smaller than females which is common for owls.
They are diurnal meaning they hunt during the day. The yellow eyes are also a sign that these birds hunt during the day. The darker colored eyes of owls indicate they are nocturnal hunters. There does seem to be some variation in this as the Great Horned and the Short Eared owls which are nocturnal have yellow eyes. Any ideas on why this might be?
