These two herons were fishing a little bit too close to each other. And when the boundaries become encroached upon as they did here all hell breaks loose. They ruffle up, squawk at each other and then jump at each other. They remind me of the Harrier jets that take off from the ground straight up as these birds do when fighting. All this takes place in a matter of moments, then it's back to fishing as they have put each other in their place.
The Great Blue Heron is one of the largest North American heron. The head-to-tail length 36 to54 inches, a wingspan of 66 to 79 inches and weigh from 4 to 8 lbs.
The Great blue herons have gray with a slight blue feather, reddish brown thighs. The neck is rusty-gray with black and white streak down the front. The head is a lighter shade with a nearly white face and a pair of black or gray plumes runs from just above the eye to the back of the head. The feathers on the lower neck are long and plume-like.
