Artist's Description
Cape Disappointment's name came about being when Captain John Meares failed to cross the river bar in 1788. This was accomplished several years later in 1792 by American Captain Robert Gray.
Cape Disappointment State Park (formerly Fort Canby State Park) is a publicly owned recreation area located southwest of Ilwaco, Washington and is the the southern portion ofLong Beach Peninsula. The lighthouse is where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean.
Winter storms can bring high surf that often washes over the rocks of the jetty and tosses the driftwood about that can be nearly the size of entire tree trunks. On this day the waves were 11-18 feet which at the height of the tide the waves were shifting the logs about and entire tree trunks were in the surf. But the waves never breached the log piles that protect the picnic area. Much high waves than the 11-18 feet waves of this day will swamp the area though and closes the area.
