Description
Cape Disappointment's name came about being when Captain John Meares failed to cross the river bar in 1788. This was accomplished several years later in 1792 by American Captain Robert Gray.
Cape Disappointment State Park (formerly Fort Canby State Park) is a publicly owned recreation area located southwest of Ilwaco, Washington and is the the southern portion of Long Beach Peninsula. The lighthouse is where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean.
Winter storms can bring high surf that often washes over the rocks of the jetty and tosses the driftwood about that can be the size of entire tree trunks.

Thanks! It is a very popular place when the huge waves are hitting! Got to get there early to even find a spot.
